Fairy’s commitment to strict EU regulatory compliance
Compliance with all relevant laws and regulations is a core commitment of Fairy’s Safety Promise.
This article outlines the key mandatory EU regulations we adhere to, the voluntary industry initiatives we support, and the long-term initiatives we proactively engage in shaping to define the direction for innovation and sustainability within the detergent industry.
Every Fairy product placed on the market is fully compliant with a comprehensive set of EU laws designed to protect you and the environment.
Key regulations governing chemical and ingredient safety include:
- REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals): ensures the chemical substances we use are registered and use risks are identified and managed.
- CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging): Mandates the hazard labelling you see on our packaging.
- Detergents Regulation (EU) 2026/405: ensures surfactants in our detergents are biodegradable, regulates ingredients like phosphates & requires ingredient lists for labels.
- Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) (EU) No 528/2012: governs the use of biocidal ingredients and finished products to ensure they are safe for people and the environment.
Key regulations governing environmental protection include:
- Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWR): sets targets for making our packaging more sustainable, reducing waste, and increasing recyclability.
- Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): establishes requirements to make products more durable, reusable, and energy efficient.
- Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD): ensures that our products are compatible with municipal wastewater treatment processes.
- Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR): requires us to confirm that key commodities, like palm oil derivatives, are sourced from deforestation-free land.
Key regulations governing consumer transparency and fairness include:
- Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD) (2005/29/EC): helps protect you from misleading or false information about product characteristics and performance.
- Green Claims Directive (proposed, amending UCPD): requires us to ensure any environmental claims we make are backed by verifiable scientific evidence.
Fairy go beyond compliance
We proactively engage in shaping the future of our industry via the following voluntary initiatives:
- The Charter for Sustainable Cleaning: a program that drives continuous sustainability improvements across the entire cleaning industry.
- Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD): a framework that promotes integrating safety and sustainability into the earliest stages of product design.
- Zero Pollution Action Plan: a cross-industry effort to reduce air, water, and soil pollution to levels no longer considered harmful to health or ecosystems.
- Human & Environmental Risk Assessment (HERA): a project coordinated by Detergents Europe and The European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) that provides a transparent, peer-reviewed framework for assessing the safety of household cleaning products during real-world use.
