How We Ensure The Perfumes Used in Fairy Products Are Safe
Many households are becoming more conscious of the ingredients in their cleaning products. It is completely understandable that you might wonder if switching to a fragrance-free dishwasher tablet could be a safer choice for your family than using scented alternatives. At Fairy, we believe you shouldn't have to choose between a brilliant clean, a fresh scent, and peace of mind. The perfumes used in Fairy products fully comply with global industry standards and fulfill our own rigorous internal review. This article explains this robust, science-based process.
Our foundation: compliance with global safety standards
Fairy fully complies with International Fragrance Association (IFRA) standards. IFRA represents the global fragrance industry and works to ensure that fragrances are safe for consumers, setting rules that can ban or limit any fragrance ingredient. These standards are built on a foundation of critical, peer-reviewed science (e.g., Api et al., 2007, Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology; Api and Vey 2008, Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology; Api et al., 2020, Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology).
This system is built on a partnership between two key bodies:
- The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM): As the dedicated scientific body for the industry, RIFM uses a risk-based approach to determine safety thresholds for fragrance materials:
- Data Identification: RIFM experts maps the unique properties of fragrance materials.
- Exposure Modeling: RIFM calculates real-world consumer exposure patterns based on consumer and manufacturers data.
- Threshold Safety Calculation: RIFM establishes safe limits thresholds by combining the material and exposure data .
- Peer-Reviewed Publication: All findings are published in scientific literature and a database of over 7,000 materials.
- The Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety: To ensure the assessments are unbiased, this independent panel of academic experts reviews all RIFM's activities.
Our additional layer of internal safety expertise
Beyond full compliance with the IFRA Standards at the perfume design stage, our own team of more than 500 safety and compliance experts review new IFRA developments and conduct a thorough evaluation of perfumes selected for our products ensuring compliance in addition with EU hazard and allergen labelling requirements.
